2nd July – I don’t know what has triggered this but our phormium has gone into overdrive this year. It normally produces four or five flower spikes, but this year it has sixteen!

I don’t know if a long winter followed by a warm spell has triggered this growth spurt. According to other gardeners across Orkney all the phormiums are doing the same. Some people have had no blooms for years and suddenly their plants are performing. It would be interesting to know if this is happening elsewhere.
It’s nice when we see things thriving…in our case it’s the weeds, lavetera and dozens of new offspring from anything we don’t want….was away for a few days in the hot period and lost all my koi and carp so starting again….it will take a while to grow them up to a meter length like the ones I buried….

Sorry about your fish losses, Colin. It must be really disheartening when you’ve put so much work into raising them. The best I’ve got are 10 tadpoles and a frog!
We’ve not had the temperatures here that you’ve experienced, 24 deg. max. (scorchio!), but that’s warm enough for us.
Hope you and Lynn are well.
